Pediatric Center for Healthy Weight

Doctors, nurse practitioners and registered dietitians designed the Pediatric Center for Healthy Weight to meet the specific needs of overweight children. We help children ages 15 months to 21 years reach their weight-loss goals.

We focus on changing behaviors for the whole family, such as:

  • Eating smaller portion sizes
  • Being active, developing better exercise habits and reducing sedentary behaviors
  • Reducing screen time (TV, video games, computer)
  • Identifying and avoiding high-calorie, low-nutrition foods such as sugary drinks
  • Following a healthy, balanced diet, even in difficult situations like family gatherings and holidays
  • Maintaining a long-term healthy weight

Our goals are:

  • Prevention
  • Family education
  • Healthy lifestyle
  • Long-term success

Ignite Your G.O.A.L. Series

Our G.O.A.L. program (Get Rid of Overweight with Appropriate Lifestyle Choices) is a new initiative to help kids from 18 months to 21 years old reach a healthy weight. The program involves changing nutritional habits and encourages physical activity.

Join The Pediatric Center for Healthy Weight and South Texas Diabetic and Metabolic Institute for an educational class led by our multidisciplinary team, including physicians, a nurse practitioner, psychologist and nutritionist to learn more. Classes are FREE. Healthy snacks, demonstrations and refreshments provided.

At your first visit, one of our clinicians will examine your child and check for weight-related issues. We will then create a weight-management program focused on improving the health of your child and family.

The clinicians at the Pediatric Healthy Weight offer a range of treatments for children and teens who are overweight or obese. We stress prevention and obesity-related healthcare.

We treat many conditions, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Pre-diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hyperinsulinemia
  • Acanthosis nigricans

Your child will work with a doctor or nurse practitioner and a nutritionist in our office. Depending on health problems, mental health issues and insurance coverage, we may connect you with an exercise physiologist or therapist.
